Turbine control system upgraded during outage of Unit 2 at Temelin

Temelin, South Bohemia, March 24 (CTK) - Specialists from engineering firm Doosan Skoda Power installed a new monitoring system for turbine control during the planned outage of the second unit at the Temelin nuclear power plant, and the system cost tens of millions of Czech crowns, plant spokesman Marek Svitak said today.

This is another modernisation measure aimed at helping to ensure more than sixty years of operation for the nuclear power plant.

The system measures the rotation time of the blades with precision down to billionths of a second.

"This is a modernisation of the turbine blade monitoring system, which we have been using for ten years. Thanks to special sensors, we can monitor during operation whether the vibrations of the last rotor blades remain within the required limits," said plant head Petr Mestan.

The outage schedule includes over 18,000 tasks, including 80 investment projects. Together with contractors, around a thousand people will be involved in the outage. This year marks the first planned outage at the Temelin nuclear power plant. The two-month outage of the first unit will begin in mid-October.

Temelin has produced 3.3 terawatt-hours of electricity since the beginning of the year. The plant's operator, energy group CEZ, is investing CZK3.8bn this year in the modernisation of the plant, CZK700m more than last year.
