Temelin to replace electrical installations for CZK800m

Temelin, South Bohemia, March 13 (CTK) - The Temelin nuclear power plant has begun preparations for the modernisation of its electrical installations for more than CZK800m, one of the largest technological changes since the plant began operating in 2002, plant spokesman Marek Svitak told reporters today.

The replacement, which involves hundreds of switchboards, will be carried out by Skoda JS, a subsidiary of semi-state energy group CEZ, the operator of Temelin, between 2028 and 2032.

During the modernisation, 172 low-voltage switchboards and more than 700 switchboard panels will be replaced. "Electricity is absolutely crucial for the operation and safety of the power plant. We must not only be able to generate it safely, but also transport it to our equipment, which ensures the operation and safety of the power plant. In terms of electrical installations, this is the most important change for us since the start of operation," said plant head Petr Mestan.

For the Temelin nuclear power plant, the replacement is important primarily from the perspective of long-term safe and stable operation. "We invest an average of around CZK7bn a year in both Czech nuclear power plants with the aim of ensuring safe, efficient, and therefore long-term operation. The modernisation of switchboards and related equipment falls precisely into this area," said Bohdan Zronek, member of the CEZ board and head of the nuclear energy division.

The contract, worth over CZK 800 million, was awarded to Skoda JS in Plzen in a tender. This is also a major engineering project for the company. "Winning this contract confirms that we are able to meet the most stringent requirements for technical solutions and quality in nuclear energy. Our expert teams will provide complete engineering, project documentation, and coordination of the actual installation and testing directly at the power plant," said Skoda JS CEO Frantisek Krcek.

CEZ is continuously modernising both nuclear power plants with the aim of ensuring their operation for at least 60 years. In Temelin alone, it has planned 238 investment projects worth CZK3.8bn for this year.

Skoda JS, part of the CEZ Group, is one of Europe's leading engineering and manufacturing companies with experience in the construction and servicing of nuclear power plants. The Skoda company was founded in 1859, and the history of today's Skoda JS began in 1956. This year, the Plzen-based company celebrates 70 years since its inception.

It has been active in the nuclear energy sector since its foundation. It works for nuclear power plants, research reactors, and spent nuclear fuel storage facilities in Central and Eastern Europe, Scandinavia, France, Germany, the USA, Austria, Finland, Belgium, Great Britain, China, Armenia, and other countries.
